Prof. Silvia Conca is a senior researcher in Economic History, University of Milan. Her research interests focus on the European economic development during the early-modern age and, by a local perspective, on the historical original aspects of Italian enterprises and bankers from the 18th century to the 20th century. Currently, she’s working on two subjects: the relationship between economy, state and war in Europe during the early-modern age and the evolution of Lombard family firms in the silk and cotton sectors, as well as their linkages with the Italian economic development in the 19th century.

Introduction:
This lecture will discuss the classic question of why Western Europe industrialized from the late eighteenth century and Asia did not. Were Europe and Asia more alike than different in early-modern age, as some historians suggest? Or did divergence occur because Europe possessed advantages in markets, property rights, science, technology, state systems? Can the Great Divergence be attributed to different competitive pressures that produced varied state policies and economic outcomes?
