Introduction:
This lecture will critically analyse the essay by the French feminist philosopher Luce Irigaray, 'Women on the Market', and consider the significance of her ideas for gender theory more generally. We will examine Irigaray's notion of commodification and 'hom(m)o-sexuality' in relation to the concept of gender essentialism and gender construction. These ideas will then be used to discuss the representation of gender in the work of two nineteenth-century French artists, Jean-Léon Gérôme and Eduard Manet. We will look at the way in which women are represented as commodities, how male and female bodies are constructed, and how far the viewer is invited to consider his or her own participation in viewing gender. The final part of the lecture will focus on the short story 'Problems, Problems' by the Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann, a comic story in which a young woman performs the feminine role to extremes. We will consider how far the notion of gender performativity is helpful in understanding gender and in offering a critique of masculine and feminine gender norms.
